NEW! AVIER AIR

At AVIER we have developed programs designed to add educational value to training flights. One of these programs is CRM (crew resource management) where you can practice the roles of pilot flying (PF) and pilot monitoring (PM) while sharing expenses.

When ian instrument candidate and a commercial candidate (instrument rated) are on board we have always encouraged the instrument pilot to file a flight plan and conduct the flight under IFR. As long as the flight is in VMC and the PF wears foggles, the PM will log PIC as a required crew member. Both pilots receive a meaningful experience in “the system.”

Here’s where it gets exciting. Until we got our clarification we suggested that the return flight with the IR (instrument rated) pilot acting as PM, we could not file an instrument flight plan. Well, I was wrong.

It is now confirmed that the IR pilot who files the plan, while remaining the pilot of record who is responsible for the outcome of the flight, does not need to be PF! That pilot can indeed file the plan and sit right seat acting as PM.

Now, we have just increased the volume of opportunities for both pilots to experience quality cycles in the IFR system:

  • file
  • clearance
  • release
  • communicate and navigate
  • approach
  • land under IFR

The training is more authentic and comfort and confidence are increased.

When is it time for you to participate in this program? As soon as you receive your private pilot license continuing right up until you hang up your wings. If you are a fresh trainee you will benefit from early exposure to the world of IFR. If you are a seasoned pilot you will be more likely to maintain your skills and confidence.

Thanks for your attention and please reach out with questions.
